Calçots are tender onions grilled over embers and eaten with a dipping sauce. A calçotada, an outdoor meal built around them, is one of Catalonia's winter traditions.

When the season is

According to the president of the Calçot de Valls protected geographical indication, the season has grown longer with climate change and now runs from November to April; it used to start in January.

The Valls festival

The Gran Festa de la Calçotada in Valls has been held on the last Sunday of January since 1982, organised by the local Chamber of Commerce and Valls town council. It is seen as the start of the high season. The 2026 edition was on 25 January, and the 2027 edition is on Sunday 31 January: the poster was presented on 19 October 2026.

Calçots at La Casa Vella

In season, the restaurant terrace fills with the smell of calçots on the grill. The days the restaurant opens are on the website, and groups of 8 to 16 can ask for a day of their own under Plan an event.
